Preparing for the Iowa State Fair

Have fun at the fair this year by planning ahead.

Have fun at the fair this year by planning ahead.

It’s that time of year again! August is home to our nationally-recognized Iowa State Fair. The Iowa State Fair attracts people from all over the United States (sometimes even the world!) and can bring in anywhere from 75,000 to 110,000 people a day!

While First Security State Bank hopes that you and your family are able to head down and visit the Iowa State Fair, we want to make sure you are prepared for all of the costs that come along with going to the Fair. Consider all of the following costs when you head to the Fair this month:

  1. Admission – Purchasing your admission tickets at the gate is the most expensive way to buy tickets for the Fair. You can save 30% by buying your tickets ahead of time online. If you plan to attend the fair every day that it is open, a punch card is the way to go to save on admission costs. Also, be aware of the themed days at the Fair that offer discounted prices. For example, the Canned Food Drive is on Tuesday the 18th and you can get a three dollar discount on an admission ticket for bringing in just two cans of food.
  2. Food – The Iowa State Fair is known for its wacky, yet delicious, food options. It is a part of Fair tradition to try these fun foods, but it can be very expensive to buy food at the Fair. Check out the Iowa State Fair’s website for a list of food options and select ahead of time the one or two foods you want to try. Once at the Fair, only eat the food items you have selected.
  3. Rides – The Fair offers all sorts of rides, activities and exhibits. Again, explore the Iowa State Fair’s website to get an idea of what will be offered this year so that you can choose just the one or two activities you and your family really want to do. This will help you avoid purchasing a ticket for an activity and then later finding an activity that you wish you would have done instead.
  4. Parking – Unfortunately, this one is hard to avoid! If you are willing to walk, your best bet for cheaper parking is probably going to be farther away from the fairgrounds.

First Security State Bank hopes that you and your family have a great time at the Iowa State Fair this month! As always, we are here for all of your banking and financial
